Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is an absolute must-do on the Big Island, Hawaii. And it’s not just because of the scenery, everything about it makes it absolutely gorgeous. Maybe it’s because I can be a science geek of sorts when it comes to volcanoes and flowing lava. I mean, come on!! Are you telling me I can see steam vents and lava in the most beautiful state in the USA? Sign me up! I would recommend taking at least 2 days to explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Stay tuned for the 2nd day to see FLOWING LAVA up close and personal!

This is what we did on the first day.. (watch the video below or here -> Videos)

This place is absolutely beautiful. I could have sat on that ledge overlooking the steam vents for hours. But it’s Hawaii and I would have gotten a really bad sunburn (which I did anyway).Aaron Hawaii Volcano National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is quite inexpensive in comparison to everything else in Hawaii. It cost $25 per car. Once you purchase the pass it is good for the whole week. Raise your hands all you military folk, because you get in for FREE! All you need is an ID.  It really is a good deal.

Whenever you get into the park there is a building called the Kīlauea Visitor Center. I’d recommend visiting this building to get a feel for the place. It’s a very easy park to navigate because there’s one road that basically goes around the whole crater. It’s called Crater Rim Drive. It is an absolutely gorgeous drive.

In our video, we did a day hike called Kilauea Iki Trail. I highly recommend it. It can take you 2 to 3 hours. What was so unique about this hike was it started out descending through a lush rainforest and then you emerged on to the crater floor. It can be challenging because you are descending pretty rapidly which means you’re going to have to climb back up just as fast. I did it in flip-flops and I was fine. (Don’t recommend that though) This crater is massive. The feeling of being so small really is a thrill in itself.

Your day will be filled very quickly with all of the hikes and scenery to look at here. Some people even spend their whole vacation here! They have accommodation available if you want to really invest your time into learning about the volcanoes in Hawaii.  I’d say 2 maybe 3 days in the park is perfect. The Big Island, Hawaii is such a beautiful island. Go explore everything it has to offer but make Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the top of your list.

My oldest’s significant other worked at that park for three years doing trail maintenance. I have always wanted to visit, but Maui keeps winning out.
